Traditional Teh Tarik Recipe
Serves 2-4 people
1 oz (1/8 cup) Loose Black Ceylon Tea
1.4 oz. (1/3 cup) Carnation Sweetened Condensed Milk
32 oz. (4 cups) Filtered Water
Scant Pinch of Pink Sea Salt or Kosher Salt
Instructions
To steep the Black Ceylon Tea, place 1/8 of a cup in your tea sock or a tea ball, placing it in 4 cups of simmering water for 3-5 minutes. Do not boil the tea. Doing so will make it bitter. Also, note that the longer you leave the tea steep, the stronger it will be. Adjust for your liking. Once the tea is steeped, transfer it to your glass or stainless steel milk pitcher.
Then add the above amount of Carnation Sweetened Condensed Milk for an entire tea portion. When making individual servings start with 1 tsp-2 tsp of sweetened milk to the hot liquid and give it a quick stir. You can always add more if desired.
Now you have your mixture of tea and sweetened condensed milk, begin starting low from one pitcher and pouring into the next, gradually raising the pitcher higher as the pour continuously flows. Once it is completely transferred to the other vessel, repeat the process. Low to High. Slow and Steady decrease spills. This process should be done 3 to 4 times until you see foam start to form.
Place the frothy, creamy warm liquid in your desired glass, mug, or cup. A thin layer of foam should be on top of your Teh Tarik. Your Teh Tarik can be complemented with a scant amount of Pink Sea Salt or Kosher Salt at this time. The salt brings out the drink’s sweetness by balancing any strong tannins in the Ceylon Black Tea.
Once you have this base recipe down, you can start creating the wide abundant varieties of Teh Tarik or create your custom blend.
Sorakan!
